German cars are publicly associated with the image of “German quality”, but the reality is far more complex: The automotive industry is dependent from global supply chains that allow for the outsourcing of numerous components of production. This outsourcing process goes hand in hand with various human rights, social and environmental risks. A huge amount of these minerals that are extracted in the resource-rich countries of Latin America, Africa, or Asia are then imported by industries mainly located in the Global North – such as the German automotive industry.
Due to complex global supply chains, transnational companies often do not have full transparency over all entities involved from the mine to the car.
In order to hold companies to account and close a regulatory gap, civil society and many more stakeholders in Germany, the EU and globally call for mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence laws.
In the two-fold input, Merle Groneweg (PowerShift) and Lara Louisa Siever (INKOTA) will illustrate human rights violations and environmental destruction linked to the extraction of minerals used by the automotive industry. They present the findings of their new study “Performance-Check Automotive Industry: Responsible Procurement?” and discuss the potential implications of binding legislation in the field of business and human rights.
