Departments of geology and mining engineering study programs mainly focus on developing technical skills as a pathway to qualifications and employment, however important issues in regard to mineral exploration and mining impact on communities require students to have other skills related to social behaviour and responsibility.
The introduction of appropriate academic courses is necessary so that the students can apply their technical knowledge in a socially responsible way.
Appropriate academic subjects should be identified and integrated into the curriculum. These should include social impact assessment, community relations, human rights issues in the production chain, conflict resolution and other courses as required.
A resource university should focus on the social, cultural, economic and political challenges that occurs when change is brought about on the site – in the global south – by mineral resource extraction.
Dr. Sturman along with Prof. Crap will show the audience their long year experience and approaches addressing that issue at two international universities, namely: the Center for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) at the Sustainable Mineral Institute of the Queensland University (Australia) and the Research Centre for Economics and Corporate Sustainability, KU Leuven; Brussel / Belgium

Die Lehrpläne von angehenden Geologinnen und Bergbauingenieurinnen sind weltweit und fast ausschliesslich auf technische Inhalte fokussiert. Angesichts der Abbau von Mineralien und die Auswirkungen des Bergbaus auf Bevölkerungsgruppen vor Ort, müssen Studierende jedoch auch ihre Sozialkompetenzen und ihr Verantwortungsbewusstsein stärken.
Die Einführung geeigneter akademischer Kurse ist nötig sodas Studierende ihr technisches Wissen auf eine sozial verantwortliche Art und Weise anwenden können. Geeignete akademische Inhalte, wie sozioökonomische Folgeabschätzung, Miteinbeziehung von indigenen Gemeinden, Menschenrechtsfragen in der Wertschöpfungskette, sowie Konfliktlösung sollten in die Curricula integriert werden.
Eine Ressourcen Universität sollte sich auf soziale, kulturelle, ökonomische und politische Herausforderungen, die durch den Bergbau im Globalen Süden entstehen, fokussieren.
